January-April

Coastal Futures Conference

Exo kicked off the year with a trip down to London to exhibit at the Coastal Futures Conference, which provided excellent opportunities to network with experts from across the ocean, coastal and water sectors.

Marine Licences for BAM Nuttall and Environment Agency

Before improvement works on existing sea defences could commence between Happisburgh and Winterton-on-Sea in Norfolk, relevant licences and permissions had to be obtained. Our role saw licence applications being developed and submitted on behalf on BAM Nuttall to permit the works to go ahead.

FibreBroads Project

In March, we worked alongside the Broads Authority on their FibreBroads project. This involved planting bulrush and reeds to aid their wider investigation into the feasibility of paludiculture, a type of wetland agriculture that provides a sustainable alternative to traditional drainage-based farming.

May-August

Small scale native oyster restoration, Wells-Next-The-Sea

We began the summer months (despite the rainy weather conditions!) with a pilot deployment of small scale native oyster restoration methods. We also took sediment samples so that environmental DNA could be used to determine the baseline biodiversity of the seabed. This will be compared against another survey in 2025 to assess the biodiversity impact of the project.

High Fen Peatland survey

July saw our return to High Fen to conduct peatland surveys on behalf of Nattergal. The site is currently undergoing habitat restoration having previously been used for agriculture.

Seagrass Survey, Catchment to Coast

We closed off the summer with a trip down to Two Tree Island in Essex to conduct a seagrass survey. On behalf of the Catchment to Coast programme, we established the percentage cover and health of seagrass which will be used to determine possibilities for future restoration.

September-December

Sediment sampling, the Fens

To determine the feasibility of a future dredging project in the area, sediment samples were taken along a 17km stretch of drain on behalf of Middle Level Commissioners. The samples were evaluated for possible contaminants which will inform future dredging licence applications.

Peatland Surveys, South Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire

We rounded off the year with a number of trips up North to carry out further peatland surveys. The first of which saw us surveying an area of the Idle Washlands on behalf of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, with another being undertaken for Forestry England in North Lincolnshire. In total, Exo excavated 714 peat cores this year!
